Lent - A mountain journey
bernese oberland

I lift up my eyes to the mountains —

where does my help come from?

My help comes from the Lord,

the Maker of heaven and earth.

Psalm 121:1-2

Bernese Oberland, Switzerland

Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob, that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.”  Isaiah 2:2-3

Lent is an opportunity for personal spiritual reflection over a period of 40 days leading up to Easter.  Many find it exhilarating being out in nature, and particularly by water or amidst mountain scenery. These reflections take us on a journey, and for these we are journeying in the mountains. Come and join us as we seek what Father God wants to say  in this season.

Sadly this is not compatible  or suitable

Jesus finding a place for solitude to pray to Father God, during  his ministry was vital.  Not just when important decisions needed to be made or during times of anguish like following John the Baptist`s death, but to regularly commune.  His solitude on the hillside was interrupted before feeding the 5000 and then afterwards he sent his disciples across the Lake whilst he again went up a mountain to pray, and then joined them walking on water.  All these are told in Matthew 14.  Jesus knew the importance to keep connected to His Father regularly.

Seeking God at all times, in all circumstances is a habit to form.

Matthew 14:23

Reflect:  Are you ever distracted from having a time with God?

What interrupts you?  Jesus responded with compassion - what do you do?

Dear Lord, thank You for all that we learn about You from Scripture. Help me to find time with You and build our relationship.

Reflect   Do you like the familiar or new experiences?

What makes some people accomplish great things for God, while others fall short of what is possible?

Some might say it is faith, while others argue that it is talent. The Apostle Paul presents another option. Are you thinking too small for a God who can do more than you can dream?

Many nations will come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways, so that we may walk in his paths.”

Micah 4:2

It`s great to have companions on the journey. Perhaps more important is to know the reason

for the journey. Being amidst nature provides

a sense of peacefulness and harmony, away

from the clatter of daily life, yet full of adventure,

new sights and experiences.

“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,”

Ephesians 3:20

Pray:  Lord, Help me to see Your vision and be open to working with You for Your purposes.

Before travelling to the Mountains, some preparation is necessary, like what to carry, the basic route, clothing, food, obstacles likely to encounter ....  As we experience these journeys, we refine our preparation, noting what helped and hindered previously.

Matthew 5:1

Stockhorn to Chrind, across the Hinterstockensee, Switzerland

The greatest sermon ever preached was on a mountain by the greatest man who ever lived - Jesus. The Sermon covered many topics but in summary, I would say that Jesus taught us how to walk as a believer.  How to live a life pleasing

to the Lord.

Reflect:  Read through the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-7) Do any of them challenge you more than others?  What might you do, or pray for, to make this teaching an ongoing part of you?

“Teach me Your way, O LORD; I will walk in Your truth; Unite my heart to fear Your name. I will give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, And will glorify Your name forever.”

Psalm 86:11-12

When at the base of a mountain we see only a little

of what lies ahead, and may be unable to see the summit.

Climb a little way, and the scene changes. Go higher, and you see the country around  a little further and more is exposed to view. At last, on the summit, look north, south, east and west.  How often have we exclaimed “I could not have imagined that so much could be seen at this elevation.”

When we first believe in Christ, we see only a little of Him. The higher we climb, the more we discover of His character, His love, His freedom, His peace.

As beautiful as they are, the mountains can be treacherous terrain. When people rely too much on apps and technology, it

can lead to mishaps that range from humorously inconvenient to downright dangerous, especially when communication is lost for awhile.

There’s no substitute for local, on the ground knowledge. Even the wisest people can get caught by a freak storm but often it’s our own pride that gets in the way of asking for directions . . . or help ...  or advice.

“I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth.”

John 14:16–17

Reflect:  How often do you seek the Holy Spirit`s help, and in what circumstances? What might happen if you connected even more regularly?

Pray: Lord, amidst all the  gadgets and tech that we enjoy, help me to remember that You are my source of life and wisdom. Thank you for sending the Holy Spirit to be counsellor, comforter,  help, guide, advocate, and strengthen us in times of need. Thank you that we can turn to you at anytime because you are in us and with us.

As the mountains surround Jerusalem,
so the Lord surrounds his people,
from this time forth and forevermore.

Psalm 125:2

We know the depth of someone's love for us by what it costs. Carrying our rucksack and falling under its weight.  In Jesus, he sacrifices his life, assuring of a deeper love than if he only sacrifices a few bruises. We see the depth of Christ's love by the greatness of what it cost him.

Reflect:  On the heights and depths of God`s love for you.  How does He reveal himself to you personally?

How does God`s love for you transform your relationships with others?

Pray:  Take time to worship God who has revealed himself to you. Ask that you might know Him more.

7

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Isaiah 55:8-9

Mountains offer a chance to see the world afresh. Whether we hike, climb, drive, take a chairlift or snowmobile, we get away, breathe fresh air, and see the view (if clouds have not rolled in!).

It looks different from high up.

Roads dwindle into the distance, and towns look small. Faraway peaks take some identifying as we see them from a new angle. The landscape stretches out before us, and we gain perspective. Breathing room. Our minds clear a bit. We get some distance, literally and figuratively, from all the things that stress us out.

Nothing compares to the difference between God’s thoughts and our thoughts. He sees everything, knows everything, understands everything. His thoughts and ways are unimaginably higher than ours. And He is love.

Reflect:  As mortals, how do you draw near to God? Is anything preventing you drawing close?

What is it like to draw close to a Holy, Awesome God?

Just as we often feel both humbled and exhilarated by the mountains, it is fitting to be humbled and exhilarated in God’s presence. We cannot comprehend His mind or

His thoughts, and yet He invites us to draw near.

Pray:  To an Almighty, Wonderous, Everlasting  God.  He is Awesome!

Father, You are my Creator, my Redeemer, and my Lord. I yield to You, and I worship You.

Fellowship can be like this too. We can have fun together whilst

engaged with tasks we have been called to, and encourage one

another on the way as we work as a team. Being the church

means collaborating with other Believers.  We can also be there for one another and encouraging when it gets tough.

Maybe it can also be an adventure that brings us together.

Part of the fun of camping or backpacking is sharing the adventure with friends whether it is the misery of the arduous steep hike, the blackfly that will not quit, the mysterious noise

in the middle of the forest that you never find

out what it was.

All those not too fun moments become stories to laugh about later when the muscle ache and tiredness has dissipated. Of course some moments truly are enjoyable—a breath taking view, butterflies weaving through wildflowers, the birds swooping through the valley, and the joint projects like pitching the tent, cooking together and eating a meal outdoors.

Let us consider how we may spur one another

on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together . . . but encouraging one another. Hebrews 10:24–25

Reflect: When things are going well, or when you face trials do you

seek out fellowship or not?  Why?

What are the biggest blessings you receive as you fellowship with other believers

Father, thank You for all Your good gifts, including the beautiful outdoors, fellow believers, and the work You have given us to do. Help us to work together with joyful hearts, knowing that this pleases You.

Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. Come up on the mountain! and look out over the landscape. What do you see? Ridge after ridge, forested areas, a lake, a village, maybe hikers on the trail.

Whatever sights we see from the peak, they are not likely to include a detailed look at people far away. Even with powerful binoculars, we cannot get a close look.

How different from the way God sees us. He sees us clearly, and much more than the outside appearance.

Leiterenpass-Stockhorn-

Sometimes mist and cloud might envelop us and it becomes cold, and easy to lose our orientation. We can`t see where we are. We can`t see the beauty around us.  It`s easy to doubt whether we are making progress.

Life too can be like this. An event happens, and our circumstances shroud us in gloom. In this world, the shadows shift,  falling across our lives, bringing darkness and cold. During difficult seasons, it can seem like the Lord is very far away from us. Although we’ve been told that He is with us even in the darkest valley, we can’t always sense His presence.

You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you,

and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

Isaiah 55:12

The splendour and grandeur of the mountain can

make us feel very insignificant, yet when catching site

of the colours in an alpine meadow, or flowers holding on to the rock in a windswept crevice, we can reflect on what God may say to us.  The flowers are not forced to grow but are a gift.  They may bloom for a comparatively short time, for some just one day, having been covered in snow during the winter and only begin to grow as the spring sunshine melts the snow and brings a little warmth to the bud.

Sometimes one day at a time is what we are given.

In the Lord’s Prayer, Jesus says, “Give us today our daily bread” Matthew 6:11. When God sent manna in the desert for the Israelites, it lasted for one day, except for what fell the day before the Sabbath. If the people wanted to eat, they had to gather it six days a week. Of course there are seasons for planning, but in some areas of life, the rhythm is daily. Whatever we do, whether we are receiving a gift from God or following as He leads, today is the time.

Reflect:  How do you remember that God is in control when everything seems to be falling apart?  Our society doesn’t like the thought of being still. Being still is another way of surrendering to God. In what area of your life do you need to be still and reflect on God?

Pray: Lord, You know my heart better than I know it myself. You know my struggles and You hold each hope and fear in Your caring hands. Teach me, Lord, to be still and to know that You are God. Like Elijah, teach me to wait for Your still, small voice and quiet the earthquakes in my life. Replace my restless doing with calm, and help me, like Mary, to sit at Your feet in quiet adoration even if there are a million things clamouring for my attention. Speak Shalom over my heart.

Our lives have seasons as well, with cycles of loss and regrowth. Sometimes we mistakenly assume that everyone moves through these seasons in the same way. There can be joy and comfort in sharing life’s stages and challenges with our

friends. But events don’t always conform to the timeline we expect.  Our Creator does not design identical carbon copies. He is extravagant in the variety and nuance in His creation. When we seek Him and  even when we don’t—He guides each of us through the seasons in the way that we need to go, providing what we need for the journey.

Reflect: Which season do you enjoy the most and why?  Are there Autumn changes taking place in your life? Talk to Father God about these.

Pray:

Dear Father, thank You that You are a Creator of variety and inventiveness. You know me better than I know myself—and You know what I need better than I do. Please help me to recognize Your provision for me in this season and to receive it gratefully, even if it’s not what I had expected.

Perhaps you see the signs of God’s grace glowing in the distance while aware of your own circumstances being shrouded in gloom. In this world, the shadows do shift, falling across our lives, bringing darkness and cold. During difficult seasons, it can seem like the Lord is very far away from us. Though we’ve been told that He is with us even in the darkest valley, we can’t always sense His presence.  We may see others feeling God`s warmth enveloping them, but not yet sense it ourselves.

Even when we don’t feel His love and grace, we know that in time, we will become fully aware of those gifts He is pouring out over us. And that is a hope brighter than any sunrise.

Reflect: What things in your life make it hard for you to have hope?

What inspires your hope in God and God's future plans for you?

Reach the summit and there will be stunning views of the surrounding countryside, but what about the mountain we’re standing on? Although we are experiencing it first hand, we can’t see it whilst on top of it. To take it all in, to see the shape and size of the mountain and how it dominates the landscape, we get a better perspective from the valley below or a more distant hill.

Had a "mountain top" experience? When we have a spiritual one we can only guess just how big it will loom in the landscape of our lives and how God might use it then or later.

While we’re on the mountaintop, it`s the time to just soak it up. Later, when we are back in the valleys, we will begin to understand the shape of that time. The exhilaration will have melted away, and the work that the Holy Spirit has been doing in us will become clear.

Reflect:  What perspective of your life do you see? How does that change when you move?

Pray: Lord reveal your perspective on my life and how I live for you.  Thank You for Your guidance both on the mountaintop and the valleys and everywhere You lead me. Thank You that You are always here to comfort me, teach me, and remind me of what You have said. Help me to be quick to listen and obey.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I

my salvation, my stronghold.

Psalm 18:2

Some mountains seem to tower up from their surroundings and draw the eye from miles around from the plain below. They give a picture of strength, and majesty.

The Bible describes God as our refuge and fortress. He is the place where we can stay, our home.

In Him we live and move and have our being. Acts 17:28. Surely there is no more secure place to be. And what a privilege to be invited to make our life in Him!

We could learn a lot from the rock hyrax. This small, rabbit-like animal makes its home in large, ragged, tumbled rocks. It knows to run to those rocks when danger comes. If a predatory bird swoops down and tries

to capture the hyrax, it runs into one of the openings of the rock. The

bird would have to tear the mountain apart to get it. As long as the

hyrax hides in the rocks, it is safe. If it wanders away into the grassland, it is an easy target. The hyrax is wise enough to know that its strength is not in its own abilities but in taking shelter in the safety of the rock.

Psalm 104:18

Familiar people and places can make us feel secure, but neighbourhoods change and people come and go. We need something or someone more reliable, unchangeable, and powerful. David knew who to make his rock. He had come to trust God was the only reliable place for comfort, refuge, and strength.

Reflect: How do you react when life puts pressure on you from all angles?   What does God`s refuge mean to you?

The enemy tries to make us fearful by scaring us about what could happen, or might transpire, but God is aware of his tactics and we can trust in His power.

Pray: Lord, thank You for the ways that You have provided a home and refuge for me, both physically and spiritually.

I show my gratitude to you for the protection I have.

People like to leave their mark, whether it be statues, monuments, carvings in tree trunks, or rubbish! which can spoil the natural. Some were built to honour or remember someone or something greatly admired. Others were built with less laudable reasons.  The Mount Rushmore statues were conceived to promote tourism and promote democracy. Blasted and carved from the rock the sixty-foot faces of four U.S. presidents look out from the granite cliffs.

God also desires to leave a mark on us. As it says in Isaiah 64:8, we are the work of His hand. How reassuring that is! He created us, and He continues to shape us to become what He planned us to be.

The Lord also cautions us in Isaiah 45:9: “Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’ Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’?”

As beings created by Him, we need to respect Him!

Reflect: Who are you allowing to shape you? Isaiah suggests we are like malleable clay - How might you offer a soft heart and flexible will to God?

Pray: Lord, I bend to Your wishes today. Thank You for creating me. I offer my heart and mind willingly. Please, make me more like You.

God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak

things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world

Dead trees are essential to forest life. They are a habitat for all kinds of wildlife, insects, birds, squirrels, foxes...  Although no longer flourishing as they once did, those trees still nurture life.

Sometimes, we may feel that our usefulness to God has ended. Perhaps we’ve weathered some upheaval. For whatever reason, we find ourselves unable to serve as we did in the past, in ways that are meaningful to us. However, God is not limited by our abilities. He works through people in surprising ways. For example, when there was a terrible drought in Israel, God didn’t send Elijah to a wealthy family with a well-stocked pantry. He sent him to a widow who was down to her last meal for herself and her son, and He provided for all three of them until the drought ended.

Sometimes God uses our strengths, and at other times our weaknesses, so that His power shines through.

Springtime is a busy season with swollen streams bubbling in their rush to descend, whilst new greenery emerges and birds and animals look to new additions to their families. Just as our hearts rise with the sight and sounds of majestic nature, it is nothing compared to what is yet to come. Nature wants to join in the exuberance of joy.

The ascent up a mountain may be a hard slog till we get to a

vantage point and view where we have come from.  It`s amazing

to sit and watch predatory birds circling seemingly without effort, rising on the thermals. They glide and soar far and high, it seems without a flap of their wings.

There are times when we all feel as though life is an uphill struggle.  Times when we experience physical, spiritual, or emotional tiredness.

It is not our effort that renews our strength.  The Lord can give us strength long after we expected to drop exhausted.  However like the eagle seeking the thermals, we need to look and wait for the call from God. Our hope is in the Lord.

Pray: Thank you for the example of effortless, inspiring flight of the eagle you have created. Thank you for your promise to renew our strength as we serve you.  Like eagles with their sight, give us eyes to see You at work

Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the  Lord descended on it in fire.

The smoke billowed up from it

like smoke from a furnace, and

the whole mountain trembled violently.

Exodus 19:18

Reyjkanes Peninsular, Iceland

God on Mountain Sinai sounds rather like a volcanic eruption with the noise, heat, smoke and fire.  The power of God was displayed in various ways when He brought His people out of Egypt.  How mighty is God!  Such sights can instil fear and respect.  Though technology may help us to be more aware, such phenomena remains very unpredictable. Volatile forces come with overwhelming power and destruction. To survive we have to get out of the way.

We all experience uncontrollable events both in nature and our lives. Life events can blow us down, knock us out. - but we have a promise:

Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals. How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!  People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.     Psalm 36:6-7

Reflect:  How would you describe God`s awesome presence?  How have you experienced God`s `unfailing love`?

Pray: Thank you that when we are caught in the storm you are there with us.

26

Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you;

your right hand upholds me.

Psalm 63:7-8

High up amongst the rocks,

amazing little flowers can be

found clinging to the shelter of

the rocks with what appears very

little soil to nourish yet they

survive and thrive.

Clinging is the humble acknowledgment that we must be intimately connected to God for life to make sense and to be worth living.

Neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love

of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.      Romans 8:39

Reflect: What do you cling to? - reputation, capabilities, possessions?

What would help you to cling more securely to Jesus?

Pray: That nothing will be able to

separate you from clinging to God

camp fire

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions,

prayers, intercession and thanksgiving

be made for all people.

1 Timothy 2:1

One of the lovely things about camping overnight in the wild is to be able to join together around an open fire talking, eating, singing, telling stories.  However, before that, wood needs to be collected, and it can be surprising just how much wood is needed to maintain the fire for warmth and light throughout the evening. Depending on the location, collecting wood for the fire can be a chore or easy, but it`s always good to know where more can be obtained if supplies dwindle.

Black Hills of Dakota

Reflect:    How would you see your prayer life, a chore or adequate supply? What might you do to increase your supply?

Regardless of how we might feel, we are assured that God hears us and will respond.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Pray: Lord it is a privilege that you listen to us when we come to you in prayer. Forgive when we forget or are distracted. Thank you for all the examples we have in the Bible and help us to be faithful in prayer.

For we are to God the pleasing aroma of

Christ among those who are being saved...

2 Corinthians 2:15

pine cones

Often our walk can take us through wood and forest which on mountain sides often contain pine trees. They provide a lovely scent, especially after rain, that wafts around as previous years pine needles are disturbed as we walk.

As Christians, we want to share the aroma, the pleasant scent,

of Jesus to others. Just as the tree does it naturally, so should

we by allowing the Holy Spirit influence our lives.  However, it comes with a warning that not everyone will like it! - just as some people are allergic to the scents.

Clent Hills

Follow God's example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.       Ephesians 5:1-2

Reflect: Called to be imitators of God -  How do you rate yourself? Have you experience of recognising Christ`s aroma in someone?

Pray: Lord Jesus I want to carry your fragrance with me wherever I go today.

Reflect: How well is Living Water flowing in your life? Are you aware of any dams or diversions? Is it flowing freely in power or a trickle?

Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said,

rivers of living water will flow from within them.

John 7:38

There is nothing more refreshing than the sight, sound, feel and taste of spring water. The promise year round of fresh water from the melted snow to raise the spirits of a weary traveller and remind us of God`s loving provision for us.

In the Bible water is often equated with spiritual cleansing and salvation like the woman who met Jesus at the well (John 4)

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.  Isaiah 12:3

Pray: Lord, thank you for your love. I acknowledge that you are the only one who can quench my spiritual thirst. Help me to remember to seek you often.

Some energetic people are called `mountain goats` but the Mountain goat can teach us much. They live in the high places to be safe from predators like lions and wolves that are less agile and cannot climb so high. They are strong and swift as they leap between the rocks landing sure footedly, able to balance on their hooves.  They are safe in the high places. They eat the lichen and lick the salt rocks rather than descending to lush ground where predators can catch them.  In the cold winters they grow a secondary coat to protect them from snow and wind rather than hibernating. God provides for them.

The high mountains belong to the wild goats; the crags are a refuge for the hyrax.

Psalm 104:18

Be on your guard; stand firm in

the faith; be courageous; be strong.

1 Corinthians 16:13

He has preserved our lives and

kept our feet from slipping.

Psalm 66:9

I love you, Lord my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.  Psalm 18:1-3

Reflect: What helps you to `stand firm`?  What circumstances cause your feet to slip spiritually?  How well do you remain on the `heights` rather than amidst predators?

Pray: Declare the truth of the verses above.

Have you entered the storehouses of the snow or seen the storehouses of the hail

Job 38:22

When heavy clouds darken the skies and obscure the peaks we need to read the weather signs and descend to shelter, especially if snow

comes that soon obscures our vision and obliterates landmarks.  It may look pretty when pristine and settled but hiking through drifts is hard work.

Santa Catarina, Italy

Storms of all kinds are painful reminders of just how powerless we can be.  How do we respond? - keep going with our heads down battling against all that is thrown at us, or seek shelter or help?  When Job questioned God, God reminded him of who he was.  Snow was one item in a long list of what he had created, understood and had power over. Job responded with trust and in humility:

"You asked, Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?'

Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,  things too wonderful for me to know."  Job 42:3

Reflect: With what attitude and how quickly do you approach God at the onset of a tumultuous season?  What does your refuge look like?

Pray:  Take Job`s prayer (above) and make it your own.

Thank you for the beauty and variety of a snow flake. As you created each flake we acknowledge that you are in control whatever the storms of life and will lead us to a place of safety.

Snow covered mountains on a clear moonlit evening seem to

shimmer with colour.  The shadows are sharp, and surprisingly

visible in the eerie light.  God created a complex pattern of weather and seasons, night and day, each having its purpose, but also providing pleasure for those able to see, experience and acknowledge the beauty.

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,

what is mankind that you are mindful of them,

human beings that you care for them?

Psalm 8:3-4

Mount Rainier, USA

God said, "Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate

the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth."   And it was so.

Genesis 1:14-15

Reflect: What does creation`s beauty say to you about  how God has created you? Do you feel feeble or powerful?

Pray: Creator God, thank you for the order and splendour of the solar system, each in perfect synchronisation. The moon and snow are lovely on their own and spectacular together. Thank you for designing such beauty and sharing it with us.  We too, are the workmanship of Your hands.

He makes springs pour water into the ravines; it flows between the mountains. They give water to all the beasts of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. The birds of the sky nest by the waters; they sing among the branches. He waters the mountains from his upper chambers; the land is satisfied by the fruit of his work.

 Psalm 104:10-13

yolyn am gorge.jpg

Yolyn Am Gorge, Mongolia

The sound of rushing water bubbling and cascading along a ravine is very refreshing as it finds its way around boulders, forming pools before continuing its descent. Animals come to drink and birds flit looking for midges rising from the water.

Jesus said: `Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink` John 7:37   An offer that is not brackish, stagnant water but constant running, fresh and life giving.

Reflect: Where do you see signs of Living Water?    What obstacles do you find in your own life  to the free flow of Living Water?

Pray: Ever-creating Spirit, who brooded over the waters of chaos and brought forth all life from them: We thank you for the wondrous gift of living water through which we die with Christ and are raised to new life of grace.

Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty, will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.

Psalm 91:1-2

Whether delayed by circumstances and the onset of dark, or clouds brewing a storm, the sight of a mountain shelter is always a joy - or even a mountain cafe is a welcome sight! To have sturdy walls and a roof offers protection and a place of safety from the elements - storm, rain and wind.

Mount Elbrus hut as fresh snow falls

Wild weather can be exhilarating but the less experienced walker is glad of a shelter.  This happens in everyday life too. We can be on a path that seems pleasant and enjoying life when suddenly spiritual unease covers us. At these times we need to seek a place of refuge.

Reflect:  When you are in a storm of life or challenge - where do you look for refuge?  What does making the declaration (v.2 above) mean to you?

Pray: Lord, thank you that you watch over us, see the path ahead and know what lies ahead.

Help me to be aware of your guidance and quick to follow your lead.

Mount Tabor

Jesus was transfigured and his glory revealed (Mark 9) as heaven touched earth and he talks with Moses (law-giver) & Elijah (prophet) so completes and fulfils O.T.

It`s thirsty work climbing a mountain, but walking alongside a stream is very refreshing, and perhaps cooling as water is taken to drink or soak aching feet.

deer in Cairngorms

Cairngorms, Scotland

You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you,  my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land where there is no water.

Psalm 63:1

As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?

Psalm 42:1-2

Hiking in the mountains, particularly when ascending the steep slopes is thirsty work.

A deer, (or dog) may pant following some exertion perhaps running to evade capture and needs to replenish the moisture lost in such effort.

Sometimes "thirst" describes a person who from the very depths of his innermost being has a driving need to satisfy a desire.  This expresses the kind of desire we should have to obtain righteousness and draw closer to God.

Reflect: How much do you thirst for the knowledge and experience of God?  Have you examples of when God quenched your thirst? How might you increase your thirst for Him?

Pray: Lord, Please flow in me, refresh and replenish and refresh others through me.

36

Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Saviour,
and my hope is in you all day long.

Psalm 25:4-5

P1030692.JPG

There are often many routes to reach your

destination. Some are a steep climb, some

easy. Some zig-zag steadily gaining height,

whilst others wind up and begrudgingly lose height before climbing again. Some aim to be a scenic route, or follow a water course.  Who knows how the route was planned or what factors were in the decision.

When obstacles and trials are on our route, God may bring us through them in many different ways. His creativity has infinite ways how His possibilities may unfold.  We may wish for the easy, gentle route with no obstacles, but following that route may mean we miss seeing the more dramatic which has a lasting impression on us.  God knows our fears, weaknesses and wounds.  No matter what the route He knows our capabilities and what is best for us.

Reflect: How satisfied are you with the route you are on, or do seek to be on

someone else`s route?  What do you want to say to God about the route you find yourself on?

Pray: Lord you have ordained that we do not all follow identical paths. Help me to be grateful and satisfied with the journey I am on. Lead me where you want me to go. I trust You.

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.

As the sun rises on a new day, the skies lighten and cast glowing colours across the earth. Mountains in particular pick up the subtle light differences as the sun`s heat burns off any lingering mist.

sunrise rockies.jpg

Rocky Mountains, Canada

As the sun rises it shines on the just and the unjust.  God gives us a new day, a fresh opportunity to serve, seek and obey.  We have all had days where we have been bruised, failed, and fallen short of who we wanted to

be and thankful that a difficult day has ended.  Yet even there, God is with us and David was able to proclaim:

On my bed I remember you;    I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help,    I sing in the shadow of your wings.  Psalm 63:6-7

God gives us a new day!

Full of light and colour - and Hope.     Hallelujah!

Reflect:    How does a new start feel? Has God ever called you to something you didn’t feel prepared for? How did you respond to that call?

Pray:  Thank you God for the gift of this new day.  Open my eyes to see Your light, and keep within your shadow.

Matthew 6:33

People tend to flock to see particular named mountains like Snowden, the Matterhorn or Mt Fuji, that are easily recognisable

by their shape or notoriety, whilst others nearby remain untouched. Some have bragging rights like the highest - Mount Everest. Who

is to say which is greater, but clouds may blanket their shapes.

Each days weather differs and there is no competition!

Mount Fuji, Japan

Zermatt Switzerland Winter.jpg

Zermatt, Switzerland

As we journey through life, it`s similar. Each of us as an individual enjoys or endures unique weather.  Our families, circumstances, strengths and weaknesses, blessings and fears, triumphs and setbacks, hopes and regrets all differ making our life story different to any other.  None of us have an identical race.  There is no one pathway to negotiate with identical benchmarks.  God is far too creative and breathed infinite possibilities into each life.

Just as no two mountains are the same, each person`s life is unique too.  We are not called to be like anyone else but to follow God faithfully.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.

Hebrews 12:1-2

Reflect :  Do you measure yourself against others?  What is the shape God has created for you?

Pray: Forgive me Lord, when at times I measure myself against others. I acknowledge that you have set out the plans for my life. Help me to run the race with endurance and finish well.

Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for

us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters-one for you, one for

Moses and one for Elijah.

Matthew 17:4

Known as the Transfiguration this episode is thought to have taken place on Tabor (see Day 17). It was

a mountain top experience that Peter did not want to end! The disciples were entranced and wanted to stay.

Like Peter, we often want to linger in our own mountain top experiences, savouring all that happens and what God is sharing with us. God has a purpose for us with these experiences. There are many and varied reasons. It may be to strengthen our faith or teach us something new or expand our view of who He is and how we might co-operate with Him more fully.   Whatever the reason, we cannot stop time and dwell in it forever.  We have to absorb it using all our senses, and then trek down to our every day reality and there allow it to influence our lives.

How many are your works, Lord!
   In wisdom you made them all;
the earth is full of your creatures.

Psalm 104:24

May the glory of the Lord endure forever;
may the Lord rejoice in his works—
he who looks at the earth, and it trembles,
who touches the mountains, and they smoke.  v. 31-32

Similarly we cannot return to the Mountain top and expect the same encounter. The path may seem familiar, going in the right direction, but constant new growth with the seasons, other creatures activity, the weather, and sunlight will all vary the experience if we open our eyes to see.  Our life and experiences day by day will impact our thinking, feeling and behaviour if we open our eyes to see!

Reflect: on the experiences and encounters you have had on your Mountain Top - What differences or impact have they made on your return?

Lord, thank you for the encouraging, renewing, Mountain Top experiences you have provided me.  May the lessons learnt continue to transform me and bear fruit in my life.  God, you are so good to us to create and share Your beauty with us.  Your creativity never ends.  Open my eyes and give me good vision to see You all around me.

The wild animals honour me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the wilderness

and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to

my people, my chosen,

Isaiah 43:20

How wonderful is Almighty God who created the mountains, designing each differently - some snow-capped, some rocky, some covered in forest green.

elk in Rocky Mountains

Elk - Rocky Mountains

He shaped the ridges and peaks.  He designed the cool waters of streams, lakes and waterfalls.  He provided homes for a variety of His creatures. He provided thermals for eagles, and stopping points for geese, and all that any bird might need.  He knows where the wild flowers bloom and where every berry grows.  The air is fresh, and the sun shines to create shimmering shadows throughout the day. The weather is unpredictable but each season has its beauty and reveals His power.  The mountains offer us a tiny glimpse of the Creator - His power, majesty, grandeur and strength.  There are places humans have not tamed, just as God cannot be tamed.  We are small, but He sees all. From Him nothing is hidden.

Reflect:  What does God say to you about how He has created you to be?   What is your response?

Pray:  Thank you for the wild places on earth you have created.  Thank you for the rain that brings abundance.

Your creation refreshes me!
