alpha and omega symbol

Alpha + Omega

The Beginning and the end, using the two letters of the Greek alphabet.

However, in the Hebrew language it is:     Alef   Tav

Hebrew Alef symbol
Hebrew Tav symbol

We find Alef Tav in the first verse of the Bible, Genesis 1:1

The word directly in the middle of this verse is spelled using the first and last letters of the Hebrew alphabet “ALEF  and TAV”. - Remember, they read from right to left!  Yet they do not form a translatable word, rather an understanding. Early translators into Greek thought these letters were unimportant  and ignored them.  However they have far reaching understanding.  Using the first and last letter of the Hebrew alphabet conveys the understanding of completeness.  Such thought can impact our understanding of scripture.

In Genesis, in the story of Jacob and Esau, each name has the Alef-Tav before their names, but it is dropped from before Esau`s name after Genesis 27:1 when Isaac asked Esau, to hunt for meat so that he may bless Esau. Even though Esau's name is continued to be used the aleph-tav continues to be only in front of Jacob's name and NOT Esau's -

because the covenant blessing of the birthright given was removed from him.  The reason Esau has no aleph-tav symbols in front of his name after Genesis 27:1 is explained by Moses for he "so despised Esau his birthright!"  (Genesis 25:34)

In the opposite way, in Ruth her name does not have the Alef - Tav until she is redeemed by Boaz and became the ancestor of King David and Jesus.

The aleph-tav symbol reveals a connection of covenant relationship.

Another place this small word is found is in Zechariah12:10    And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.

….They shall look upon Alef Tav pierced…

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth

I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, says the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

 Revelation 1:8

In Revelation 1:8 Jesus tells John:  He is the beginning and the ending, the “Alpha and Omega” The translators used the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet since they were translating from the Greek. Yet, we know Jesus was a Jew and He would not have been speaking in Greek but in Hebrew. It should have been translated “I am the Alef and Tav.” using the first and last letter of the Hebrew alphabet.

..for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ  — Revelation 1:9

The first verse of John`s Gospel reads:  In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and God was the Word.  "Alef - Tav" is used in the beginning.  The Word, in the beginning - Jesus.  The words of Torah are the Source of Life,

I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What you see, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches. . . — Revelation 1:11

The message required spreading throughout the world, commencing with those seven churches

Near the end of Revelation we read:

And he said unto me, It is done.  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.            — Revelation 21:1-6

Recall Jesus words from the Cross: "it is finished

Psalm 119 is the longest of the psalms, which is divided into 22 sections beginning with each letter of the Hebrew alphabet.  from Alef to Tav.  The Psalm is all about God`s Torah, the Word of God, its law, decrees and statutes.  Jesus is the Word of God.  It helps to recognise that Jesus was there at the beginning, and throughout, and will be there at the end. - Alpha & Omega,  Alef & Tav.

I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.  Revelation 22:13

The Alef symbol from ancient Hebrew was an ox, and meant "strength"
